31 January 2009
The Philippine Embassy regains the ASEAN Missions Overall Sports Tournament Championship Trophy. The award was given during the finale of the program at the ASEAN Night held on 21 January 2009 at the premises of the Embassy of Brunei Darussalam, the event’s host. The trophy was personally handed over to Ambassador Antonio P. Villamor by Ambassador Syed Omar Al Saggaf of Malaysia, the last year’s champion.
The Philippine Embassy became this year’s champion for garnering the highest number of total points in its participation in the different sports competitions organized by the ASEAN Riyadh Sports and Social Committee (ARSSC). Except for the Sepak Takraw Game, the Philippines secured a place either as champion or runner-up in the Road Race, Bowling, Table Tennis, Darts, Golf, Ladies Putting and Volleyball games.
Three (3) Challenge Trophies were also given to the Philippine Embassy for being the Champion in Road Race, Bowling and Volleyball competitions. In accordance with the rules of the ARSSC, two (2) of said Challenge trophies, which are usually rotated annually among the winners, will now be kept permanently by the Embassy for being the Champion in Road Race and Bowling tournaments for three (3) consecutive years.
The other recipients of Challenge Trophies were Brunei (Ladies Putting and Sepak Takraw), Indonesia (Table Tennis), Myanmar (Darts) and Singapore (Golf).
The occasion also gave an opportunity for each Embassy to promote its unique culture by participating in the food and handicrafts fair. The crafts were sold but the food was distributed for free among the guests. Beef Caldereta and Chicken Afritada were the two (2) native dishes donated by the Philippines in harmony with the ASEAN Missions agreement for the annual event.
Guests were entertained by cultural performances prepared by the participating countries. For the Philippines, the students from the International Philippine School in Riyadh represented the Embassy in performing traditional rural dances called Konan (coin dance) and Sakuting (war dance). The drawing of raffle tickets was also conducted intermittently during the program, which made the occasion more exciting and enjoyable. More than sixty (60) prizes were given away. The Filipinos were lucky to have bagged twelve (12) of said prizes.
The night ended with lots of wholesome fun among friends and ASEAN family members from Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam. pls see pic
